Department of Forensic Medicine at the Pondicherry
Institute of Medical Sciences is headed by Professor
. Dr. Udit B. Das, M.D (Forensic Medicine). Dip ARD,
who is ably supported by team of Forensic experts.
The Forensic Department at PIMS trains medical
students in all aspects of Forensic Medicine
including Toxicology and proper medicolegal
documentation. The Department imparts enough
knowledge to our medical students that they are
confident to tackle all kinds of medicolegal
problems as well as medico- legal autopsies.
This is the only private institution in the state of
Puducherry recognized by the state government for
performing autopsies since 2003. The Department
performs around 200 autopsies a year in addition to
various crime scene visits and exhumations. These
numbers are expected to increase in the coming years
as the Department has carved a niche for itself as a
high quality performance-oriented department second
only to none in the entire union territory and
neighboring districts of Tamil Nadu.
Regular autopsies are conducted in a neat, well
equipped mortuary complex which rivals with the best
in the country. Autopsies of decomposed bodies are
performed regularly in a well equipped open
mortuary. Recently started Toxicology lab does
testing for THC (Tetra hydro cannabinol) and will
include testing for more poisons and drugs in the
The Department provides facilities for Embalming
(Chemical preservation facilities) of dead bodies.
It also has one of its kind unique cold storage
facilities to preserve the dead bodies that no other
medical colleges or a center in the state can boast
The Department has the distinction of having cent
percent pass results in all the university
examinations conducted till date with one third of
the students securing distinction marks in the
subject each time.
The Department has an excellent Forensic Museum
comprising of hundreds of specimens, photographs,
weapons, several poisons of biological and chemical
origins and numerous charts. Museum serves the dual
purpose of being an effective educational tool for
the students as well as for the public to understand
the subject and functions of the department. A well
equipped student’s lab and a departmental library
stocked with books of authors of national and
international repute and up-to-date hard cover bound
journals enable the students to hone their skills.
The Department is involved in conducting workshops
for the medical and non-medical fraternity. The
faculty members are called as resource persons for
various medico-legal events. The Department has
extended its autopsy and embalming services to
individuals of other nationality and certificates
issued by the department has been approved by
various foreign countries for expatriation purposes.
Research works conducted by the faculties in the
department have been published in various national
and international journals.
