The Department of Forensic Medicine at The Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences is headed by Professor. Dr. K. Ravindran with the able assistance of Dr. Udit B. Das, Associate Professor

In this department, medical students are trained in tackling all kinds of medico legal problems including medico legal autopsies.

This is the only private institution in the state of Puducherry to be recognized by the government for performing autopsies.

Catering to the needs of the considerable population with French connection in Pondicherry, embalming of dead persons and cold storage facilities are provided in this department which is of immense benefit to the bereaved relatives.

The first two batches of students passed out with 100% results in the university examinations with one third of them securing distinction in forensic medicine.

The department can boast of an excellent Forensic Museum comprising of hundreds of specimens, photographs, weapons, several poisons of biological and chemical origins and numerous charts which is of immense educative value and help to enhance the knowledge of students. The museum and the fully equipped department library provide an ambience to study this intriguing yet interesting subject for the multitude of students.
